The Mendip Hills

We are just back from a few days in Somerset where we have been walking the Mendip Hills.

The views from Crook Peak at 628 ft (208 m) are amazing. To the west you can just make out Wales across the Bristol Channel, to the south you can look out across the Somerset Levels towards Glastonbury Tor and the Quantock Hills, and to the east the villages of Axbridge and Cheddar & The Cheddar Reservoir.
The caves in these hills have revealed that they were once used by Hyena's before the Ice Age.

This was also a nostalgic trip for me - I was born south of London but this is where I grew up. When I was between 12 and 15 years old I used to spend all my free time at a stables in the village of Cross. Our reward for cleaning and looking after the horses was to escort people that paid for 2, 4 and 8 hour horse riding lessons.
I used to gallop horses flat out across these hills and I knew the hills like the back of my hand. In the evening when we took the horses off the hills down to the levels we used to ride a horse bare back and we led 3 horses in each hand ... childhood memories.
