Alexandra & Martin's Wedding

Ceremony: Sorunda Kyrka, Sorunda.
Reception: Häringe Slott, Västerhaninge, Stockholm.

Alexandra and Martin were married yesterday, they held their English-Swedish wedding in Sweden.
When I talked with Martin on the phone the day before he asked me what the weather forecast was - as I spoke with him I heard the gale blowing outside and the rain lashing on the window ... the forecast is good I said.
The weather people got it right with their forecast and the day turned out to be fine and sunny.

Whilst Martin got ready in Stockholm Alexandra got ready at Häringe Castle where they were to have their reception later in the day and where they and their guests would be staying.
Alexandra and her bridesmaids used the Sea Wing with its adjoining suites that were named after the many famous visiting guests, amongst others the Swedish icon Greta Garbo.

The Vicar Martin Andersson was very friendly and he went out of his way to help us - it was greatly appreciated.

Martin told us that it was a magical moment when he saw the drape at the back of the church being pulled aside and saw Alexandra standing there holding her dad's arm - he also looking splendid in his Brigadiers uniform.

The service was very good with Martin the vicar alternating seamlessly between Swedish and English.
A solo song 'Ave Marie' was sung by Irene Änggård from the balcony at the back of the church - she sung beautifully and It was very moving.

Having being proclaimed man and wife this happy couple kissed each other not once but 3 times ... each time getting slightly longer - Martin the vicar said something ( I didn't quite hear what) but he had them and the congregation laughing.

We left Alexandra and Martin as the sun started to set over the castle.
It is said that The Sea Wing is haunted, on the castle's website is a counter for ghost sightings - there were 7 in 2007, if it went bump in the night and they saw the first for 2008 remains to be told.

Sophie & James's Wedding

Ceremony: St Nicholas Church, Chislehurst, Kent.
Reception: Savile Club, Mayfair, London.

Sophie and James were married on Saturday, they had luck with the weather - it had been dismal all week but this day turned out to be a perfect summers day.

There was a lot of activity in the morning at Sophie's parents house - Sophie together with her bridesmaid, mum and grandma all got ready there - her brother practiced his church reading, lunch was made and the champagne was organised for the guests refreshment on the bus ride back to the reception at the Savile Club in Mayfair.
James met up with the guests for pre wedding drinks at the pub opposite the church.

Sophie was driven to the church in a 1951 Daimler, she looked beautiful in the dress she had helped to design.

After all the months of planning for the wedding the moment had arrived ..... and they both felt it.
As the church doors opened James composed himself - Sophie holding her dads arm took a deep breath and then proceed down the aisle.

The ceremony held by the Rector Simon Burton-Jones went very well and their was some beautiful singing by the church choir.
Simon having just proclaimed them man and wife made everybody laugh by instead of saying ''You may now kiss the bride'' he turned to Sophie and said ''You may now kiss the groom'' ... needing no prompting she took hold of James and kissed him so quickly that both Marianne and I nearly missed the shot.

It was quite a sight to see 3 London Roadmaster buses decorated in white ribbons driving in a row taking all the guests to the reception, on arrival they were greeted by Sophie & James and their parents.
It must have been a wonderful feeling to have been able to welcome 160 of your friends and family that were all gathered together and were a part of this very special day.

Sabina & Eric's Wedding

Ceremony: Djurö Kyrka, Djurö.
Reception: Fågelbrohus, Värmdö.

Sabina and Eric both from Switzerland now living in London were married yesterday at the picturesque Djurö kyrka in the Stockholm archipelago.
The evening before their visiting friends and relatives were treated to a traditional Swedish Crayfish Party on a small island not far from Stockholm.

As Eric was getting ready he practiced his speech on me, I had a short break sat in a chair and listed - it was very good.
His opening was to be that his speech was going to be like a mini skirt - long enough to cover the essentials yet short enough to keep you interested.
Further into his speech he went on to say that marriage was about 3 rings - An Engagement ring, A Wedding Ring, and Suffering ... if no one else he made the photographer laugh.

Sabina's feather hat creation was amazing, it was hand made in London.
The black and white feathers matched her white dress with black stripes perfectly and she looked stunning.

The service went very well and the small wooden church from 1683 created a warm, cosy and relaxed atmosphere.
I was able to take a picture of the service from an unusual angle, I noticed that the church doors were left open so whilst Marianne was taking pictures at the front I left the church and walked back up the drive and took a picture of Sabina & Eric at the alter from 30m away.

Sabina & Eric left the church under a rain of white petals and were congratulated by family, friends and tearful mums.
The staff from Fågelbrohus had laid a table with champagne so everyone was able to toast the bride in the avenue outside the church - it was a nice touch and worked well.
A boat was waiting near the church and took everyone on beautiful trip through the archipelago back to where the reception was to be held.
On the trip back the weather cleared and it became a pleasant summers evening - a fantastic day was had by all.

The early days with a pro digital camera

At our last wedding I was talking with a guest about digital cameras and he asked me how long I have been shooting digital... I thought about it and my answer surprised even me - 11 years.

I was quite amazed that I have not used film for the past 11 years and I thought I would dig out my first digital camera and take a picture of it - it was the size of a brick and was a beast to use.

At the time I was working as a staff photographer for an international picture agency.
It had a Kodak camera back on a Canon EOS-1 N camera body - and was called a Canon EOS DCS 3c (The c standing for it took colour images, there was a cheaper black and white version).

I shot the Football World Cup in France 1998 on one of these beasts.
You could only charge the camera as it did not have a changeable battery - the charge lasted about 40 minutes .. just enough if you were lucky for the first half and then a quick charge in the pause before the 2nd half.

I was at the very important match England - Argentina which went to a penalty shoot out, just as the penalties started the battery died and I was left with a dead camera ...

The large digital cards used then were notoriously bad - commonly known as 'Vipers' they had a small hard drive that rotated inside - they actually had moving parts-!! the slightest knock on the card or camera and all the images were lost for ever - and that happened many times. The above picture shows a Viper together with today's latest Flash Card.

Even though these first professional digital cameras were very unreliable the benefits in time saving were just amazing and for the very first time we photojournalists could transmit pictures directly from the pitch in real time rather than waiting to develop our films after the game.

Pernilla & Chris's Wedding

Ceremony: Hedvig Eleonora Kryka, Östermalm, Stockholm.
Reception: Atrium, Nationalmuseum, Stockholm.

It was strange weather in Stockholm yesterday for Pernilla and Chris's Swedish-American wedding, it was almost tropical with high humidity and intermittent heavy showers.

The minister Georgina Fornhammar gave a good service, she picked up on a spelling mistake in the order of service ''Ceremony of Wholly Matrimony'' which should have been ''Holy Matrimony'' she quite cleverly turned this into her thoughts of how a marriage is a whole commitment as well as a holy one.

We took the portraits at the grounds of the City Hall, just as we were finishing it started to rain so we took cover in the roofed courtyard to take some final shots.
Chris is known for his happy smile, we were joined by a lot more smiling people - Japanese tourists also sheltering from the rain, they promptly started filming and taking pictures of this happy couple - as we left they gave a spontaneous round of applause, it was good fun.

Before the reception held in one of the beautiful halls at the National Museum their friends and family were treated to a cruise around Stockholm's archipelago on the 106 year old steamship M/S Oden Gamle.

Stockholmers are known in Sweden as '08' (Stockholm's telephone prefix) and as this days date was 080808 the city put on an enormous fantastic firework display in the evening to celebrate '08 Day' just by where Pernilla and Chris held their reception - a great end to the day and a great start for their new life together.
